Firstly what is my broadband?  Basically broadband means that the medium being used has the ability to transport multiple signals and traffic types at the exact same time.   My broadband speed is measured in bits per second.  This is also called bandwidth or data transfer rate.  It determines how much data can get from one point to another a second.  The more data that can be moved a second the faster your internet connection will be.  The faster my broadband speed is the quicker I can download films and watch videos.

There are a lot of factors involved in determining and influencing the speed of broadband.  This includes the medium used.  The fastest medium yet is fibre optic cables because they use light to transmit data.  Other factors include the length of the medium being used and other factors such as electro magnetic interference can even have an effect on the speed of my broadband.  Other factors include the access you have to your wifi hotspot if you are using wireless.  Wireless signals don't pass through solid walls very well so this will slow the connection down.  

How do I work out my broadband speed?

The broadband speed being advertised with your ISP is generally the highest possible speed at the best times.  In other words you will rarely get the broadband speed they say you will.  This could be because of the area you live in and peak usage times.  The best way to work out my broadband speed is to download something that shows how fast it is going at and use the following 1mb = 1024 kilobytes 1 kilobit = 8192 bits
