Google Nexus Tab

Abstract: This article is a review on the google nexus tab.  It will cover as much about the nexus 7 tablet as possible including price, features, screen size, quality and performance.

What is the Google Nexus tab?

The google nexus tab is a 7 inch tablet designed by Google and manufactured by Asus.  The Google Nexus has been a big success since its release because it was one of the first 7 inch tablets created.  Not only that but the price tag it comes with is very respectable at £200 for the 16gb model.  For this kind of price tag you would expect a cheap tablet but it certainly doesn't feel like it and it out-powers anything else in its class.  Its nearest rival would be the kindle fire hd and the newly released Ipad mini.

Google Nexus 7 design

The Google Nexus tab comes with the latest version of Android operating system which is Jelly Bean 4.1 however 4.2 is being released soon.  The display is and hd backlit display with a 1200 by 800 resolution which isn't quite as good as the retina screen on the ipad but you have to remember this tablet costs more than half the price of it.  The front of the nexus 7 doesn't have any buttons as such but has a 1.2 mega pixel camera.  The entire screen is corning gorilla glass which is very strong and will hold up better than standard screens should you accidentally  drop it.

There is one weird issue with the design of this Google Nexus tab and that is when you tilt it on its side apps will change to landscape.  However the home page will stay fixed in portrait mode which is contrary to previous Android design.  There are three main buttons on the tablet it self one for putting it too sleep and the other two for volume control which are very accessibly placed.  At the bottom there is a thin speaker, a micro usb port and a headphone jack.

The Nexus 7 is mainly made out of plastic and glass however it still feels as well built and durable as the likes of the Apple Ipad.

Google Nexus tab features

The Nexus 7 tab packs the usual array of features, including an accelerometer, magnetometer, even a gyroscope and a GPS chip to take advantage of Google Maps' new offline mode for navigating through the world when Wi-Fi isn't available.  This by the way is an incredibly good feature not found on anything else at the minute.

The display screen seems to be lacking in contrast however when viewing the likes of photographs it is still good enough.  Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is a great operating system and already it is becoming popular on other devices.  The keyboard is the best we have seen and coupled with the Tegra 3 processor and 1gb ram the nexus runs the OS very well.

Browsing the internet is great but it comes with a few tablet problems.  Since the screen is small you do often have to zoom out to make it bigger but the pages load quickly and the chrome browser works very well.  If the google nexus tab thinks that you have hit the wrong link it will pop up giving you a choice of the two links which comes in handy.

The Google Nexus tab has wifi but sadly no 3g.  Wifi isn't exactly rare these days so it shouldn't really be a problem.  Wireless testing has shown that the Nexus may be quicker than an Ipad which is pretty impressive.

The Google Nexus 7 is available in either 8gb or 16gb with no micro sd card however Google had this designed in mind with Google play meaning very little was to be stored on it but streamed instead.  On top of this there should be a 32gb model coming out which is to replace the 16gb model for the same price.

Battery life is good for this nexus 7 tab.  Google claims 8 hours however I have seen them last for ten hours so I guess it depends on how you use it.

Google Nexus tab final verdict

In conclusion the google nexus 7 tab is a brilliant tablet for its price range.  It is more than half the price of an ipad but the ipad is not twice the tablet.  The only differences is the quality yet the nexus doesn't feel worse and the retina screen on the ipad is better.  We do think that the android operating system is much better than the Apple operating system.  Keep in mind though the Google Nexus tab was not built to take on the Ipad but the Kindle fire instead which we think it has certainly thrashed.

Hopefully you have enjoyed this article and have a better idea of how the Google Nexus tab performs.
