What is GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it is a fairly recent technology that has changed how we use the world today.  A lot of the most advanced technological devices such as smartphones use GPS more commonly however it is used in your car for finding your way to a location.

GPS is a satellite navigation system made up of 24 satellites which were put into orbit by the United States.  It was originally intended for Military use however civilians have access to it 24 hours a day 7 days week no matter what the weather is.

How does GPS on a tablet work?

GPS works on a tablet the same way it works on any other device.  Basically the satellites that orbit the earth transmit signals to earth.  The Nexus 7 Tablet GPS receiver picks these signals up.  Using mathematics it can use this information to pinpoint the exact location of the user to quite a good accuracy.  This information can also be used to create and show routes on sat navs.

What can the Nexus 7 Tablet GPS be used for?

The Nexus 7 tablet has a GPS receiver so can take advantage of this very useful technology.  On top of this Google who designed the Nexus 7 have a very powerful tool called Google maps which can be used to show a user how to get a choosen destination.  The problem with this though is that you will constantly need to be connected to the internet to update the route.  Cleverly though and this is a massive point for the Nexus 7 tablet that no other tablet does the Nexus 7 allows you to save maps locally on your hard drive.

The Nexus 7 tablet GPS system can then calculate where you are on the map without a wifi connection so this can act as a very useful GPS system for travelling.  Even though you are not connected to the internet it will still show your exact location on the map because of the GPS technology and software within the Nexus 7.

To make use of this great feature you will need to download an app from the Play store a good app is called co pilot.
