The difference between led and lcd tv

Abstract: This article will give you an overall understanding of the difference between led and lcd tv and how they work.  It will look over the advantages and disadvantages of both tvs and help you decide on which one to buy.

What is a led tv?

A led tv is a tv which uses light emitting diodes as a backlight instead of standard Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps found in most LCD televisions.  A led tv is actually a lcd tv but the difference is the back lights i.e. the use of light emitting diodes which can be coloured or clear.  Coloured leds give a much better image.

Led is a recent advancement in flat screens or hd tvs over the past couple of years.

How does an led tv work?

There are two ways in which an led tv can work.  It can either be edge lit or full array.  Edge lit tvs use leds placed along the edge of the lcd panel and for full array rows of leds are placed behind the entire lcd panel.  Edge lit tvs are cheaper and thinner because the leds take up less space however the full array led tvs produce much better pictures.

What is the difference between led and lcd tv?

So the difference between led and lcd tv is technically nothing because they both use a liquid crystal display panel however a led lcd tv uses a led back lighting instead of a cathode ray fluorescent tube.  Led backlight lcd tvs are much more expensive but are thinner, use less power and produce better images.

So what one should I buy?

This ultimately depends on how much money you have to spend.  A standard lcd tv will be the cheapest, thickest, produce the worst picture and be the least environmentally friendly.  A led backlight tv which is edge lit will produce a better image, be more economical and be the thinnest out of the lot.  However the full array backlight  tv will produce the highest contrast ratio and best images but it will be thicker and the most expensive.

I hope that you have enjoyed this article and hopefully by now you will have understood the difference between led and lcd tv.
